Kanye West Sparks Outrage with Controversial T-Shirt
Despite a recent apology to the Jewish community for his “unintended” antisemitic remarks, Kanye West has once again ignited controversy with his fashion choices. On Friday, a photo surfaced online showing the billionaire rapper sporting a black Kanye West Burzum Shirt emblazoned with the logo of the black metal band Burzum and its notorious frontman, Kristian “Varg” Vikernes.
In the photo, West stands alongside rapper JPEGMafia, proudly displaying his “fixed and permanent” $850,000 titanium dentures. JPEGMafia, whose real name is Barrington DeVaughn Hendricks, captioned the Instagram post with a seemingly nonchalant “can’t talk right now. doing hot girl s–t.”

Kristian “Varg” Vikernes, 50, is a complex and controversial figure. While recognized as a highly influential musician within the black metal genre, his career has been overshadowed by acts of violence and his association with white supremacist ideology.
Vikernes, under the moniker Burzum, gained notoriety in the early 1990s. However, his fame took a dark turn in 1993 when he was convicted of murdering his Mayhem bandmate Euronymous. He was sentenced to 21 years in prison, during which he reportedly founded the Heathen Front, a neo-Nazi organization promoting antisemitic and white supremacist views.
Even after his release in 2009, Vikernes’ troubles continued. In 2013, he was arrested in France on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack, though charges were ultimately dropped due to insufficient evidence. The following year, he was convicted of a hate crime in France for inciting racial hatred on his blog. He has also been accused of racism towards Black people.
West’s Choice: Reckless Endorsement or Uninformed Provocation?
West’s decision to wear the Burzum shirt raises several questions. Is he deliberately aligning himself with Vikernes’ extremist views, or is he simply unaware of the musician’s troubled past? Some fans speculate that West might be using the shirt as a form of provocation, seeking to generate controversy and attention.
However, others argue that West has a responsibility to be more mindful of the symbolism associated with his clothing choices. Wearing a shirt featuring a figure like Vikernes, regardless of intention, sends a harmful message and can be interpreted as tacit endorsement of his hateful ideologies.
